Surface and Tropospheric Response of North Atlantic Summer Climate from Paleoclimate Simulations of the Past Millennium

چکیده
We investigate the effects of solar forcing on North Atlantic (NA) summer climate, in climate simulations with Earth System Models (ESMs), over preindustrial past millennium (AD 850–1849). use one simulation and a four-member ensemble performed MPI-ESM-P CESM-LME models, respectively, forced only by low-scaling variations Total Solar Irradiance (TSI). apply linear methods (correlation regression) composite analysis to estimate NA surface tropospheric climatic responses decadal variability. Linear CESM indicate weak response sea-level pressure (SLP) 500-hPa geopotential height TSI, decreased values Greenland increased subtropics. Composite indicates that, during high-TSI periods, SLP decreases eastern Canada at increases subtropical NA. The possible SSTs is overlapped model internal Therefore, for TSI changes, state-of-the-art ESMs disagree effect indicated proxy-based studies millennium. control all variables studied, spurious patterns apparent may arise from single simulations.

Using paleoclimate proxy-data to select optimal realisations in an ensemble of simulations of the climate of the past millennium
We present and describe in detail the advantages and limitations of a technique that combines in an optimal way model results and proxy-data time series in order to obtain states of the climate system consistent with model physics, reconstruction of past radiative forcing and proxy records. To achieve this goal, we select among an ensemble of simulations covering the last millennium performed w...

Atlantic Ocean forcing of North American and European summer climate.
Recent extreme events such as the devastating 2003 European summer heat wave raise important questions about the possible causes of any underlying trends, or low-frequency variations, in regional climates. Here, we present new evidence that basin-scale changes in the Atlantic Ocean, probably related to the thermohaline circulation, have been an important driver of multidecadal variations in the...
متن کاملAnnually resolved North Atlantic marine climate over the last millennium
Owing to the lack of absolutely dated oceanographic information before the modern instrumental period, there is currently significant debate as to the role played by North Atlantic Ocean dynamics in previous climate transitions (for example, Medieval Climate Anomaly-Little Ice Age, MCA-LIA). Here we present analyses of a millennial-length, annually resolved and absolutely dated marine δ18O arch...
متن کاملResponse of the North Atlantic surface and intermediate ocean structure to climate warming of MIS 11
Investigating past interglacial climates not only help to understand how the climate system operates in general, it also forms a vital basis for climate predictions. We reconstructed vertical stratification changes in temperature and salinity in the North Atlantic for a period some 400 ka ago (MIS11), an interglacial time analogue of a future climate. As inferred from a unique set of biogeochem...
